Coupons

  • Ukulele World: UW77 saves 7.7% on anything they sell.

Ukulele Makers and shops:

  • Jazz Box Ukes Arch top ukes at good prices. Reviews I've found all rave.
    • Prefer durable/hardy construction/materials but not at sacrifice of sound/tone.
    • Floating Fretboard
    • Radius Fretboard
    • Blank Fret board w/ small dots on top/edge of neck.
    • Probably ebony fretboard
    • Hand Guard
    • Simple binding
    • Leaning toward cut-away
    • Leaning toward violin cut-outs.
    • Leaning toward lighter colored body w/ dark accents similar to this one or this.
  • Kamaka Ukulele.
    • Standard w/ matte finish, ebony fingerboard/bridge/faceplate, geared tuners.
    • Tenor w/ matte finish, ebony fingerboard/bridge/faceplate, geared tuners... ponder an 8 string, can you just remove 4 strings and play it like a regular 4 string? Hrrmmmm... and what strings do you run on an 8?
  • Kanile'a Tenor

Tenor Cutaway w/ Slotted headstock

  • Ko Olau.
    • Ko'olau Model T-100, Geared Tuners, Satin Finish Tenor 4 ($1275) or 8 String (+200) w/ Cutaway Body (+$400), Slothead Headstock (+250): $1925/4string, $2125/8string.
    • Pono Pro-Classic Series Rosewood RTSHC Tenor Cutaway w/ slotted headstock: $919.00
    • Pono Maple Pro-Classic Series Pono MPTC-E Tenor Cutaway, I think you can get this w/ cutout headstock, very pretty uke.

Fluke:

Koa w/ wood fretboard...

Strings

Karl Villaverde likes to run concert strings on his sopranos. Elderly seems to have the best pricing on Aquila Nylgut strings:

Banjolele

  • Flea came out w/ one, Kent's got one, need to check it out.

Amplified Ukes

  • One of these Roland Mobile Cube Amp, $169 or the MicroCube for $129.
  • ...with one of these VOX mini-amp $35 from Amazon for headphones would make a great quiet traveling Uke... and doesn't seem like it would be TOO hard to make one...

Thin-line travel Ukes

...like the Kala reviewed here on UkeHunt and supposedly good pricing at Bananas At Large (tax) and Elderly(no tax):

Misc:

  • PlayOn Tuner... got a Snark, dig it.
  • GString tuner for Android

Make yer own ukulele:

Nice looking strap design.

Notes

Steel Strings: "Dag" from UkeHunt recommends: "If you go with steel, my instincts advise that you stick with solid extruded steel strings. Avoid “wound” strings. I think the tone quality will be much better with solids. If you go with steel, take a week to properly “extend” the strings (versus stretching them). Tighten them up little by live over the course of a day. Once you hit tune, play the strings until they go out of tune. Then, tune again and let them sit over night. Due this for about 7 days or so, and your strings will be tempered. This will preserve the sound quality in the long term and will help you avoid warping the neck."
