• Big Island Ukuleles ...also called "Honu" meaning Turtle. The owner has a interesting forum post explaining why his ukes are a great deal even tho they're made in Taiwan. The "Big Island Koa Tortoise Rope": KI-KTOE-TRC, cutaway w/ pickup for $919 is nice. Karl V. recommends this maker.
• Lanikai Ukes is an economical uke Karl V. recommends. I'm not sure I like as much how they look but be interested to see some and listen to them. Here's one at Ukulele World for $289, looks nice.
• Mele Ukulele, just stumbled across these... no idea how good they are...
• Gomes Ukuleles, Karl V. couldn't say enuf good about this guy's ukes.
• LoPrinzi Ukes, highly recommended on some forums for good sound and quality builds.

Notes

Steel Strings: "Dag" from UkeHunt recommends: "If you go with steel, my instincts advise that you stick with solid extruded steel strings. Avoid “wound” strings. I think the tone quality will be much better with solids. If you go with steel, take a week to properly “extend” the strings (versus stretching them). Tighten them up little by live over the course of a day. Once you hit tune, play the strings until they go out of tune. Then, tune again and let them sit over night. Due this for about 7 days or so, and your strings will be tempered. This will preserve the sound quality in the long term and will help you avoid warping the neck."
