Strings

Karl Villaverde likes to run concert strings on his sopranos. Elderly seems to have the best pricing on Aquila Nylgut strings:

Banjolele

  • Flea is coming out w/ one that sounds nice.

Amplified Ukes

  • One of these Roland Mobile Cube Amp, $169 or the MicroCube for $129.
  • ...with one of these VOX mini-amp $35 from Amazon for headphones would make a great quite traveling Uke... and doesn't seem like it would be TOO hard to make one...

Thin-line travel Ukes

...like the Kala reviewed here on UkeHunt and supposedly good pricing at Bananas At Large (tax) and Elderly(no tax):

Misc:

  • PlayOn Tuner... got a Snark, dig it.
  • GString tuner for Android

Make yer own ukulele:

Nice looking strap design.

Notes

Steel Strings: "Dag" from UkeHunt recommends: "If you go with steel, my instincts advise that you stick with solid extruded steel strings. Avoid “wound” strings. I think the tone quality will be much better with solids. If you go with steel, take a week to properly “extend” the strings (versus stretching them). Tighten them up little by live over the course of a day. Once you hit tune, play the strings until they go out of tune. Then, tune again and let them sit over night. Due this for about 7 days or so, and your strings will be tempered. This will preserve the sound quality in the long term and will help you avoid warping the neck."
